Child custody laws are designed to organize and regulate the transition from a single, unified family to a separated one, while keeping the best interests of the child(ren ) in mind. Under custody laws, one parent, known as the "custodial parent," will usually be given custody of the child. The child will then spend the majority of his or her time with the custodial parent, while the non-custodial parent will have certain visiting rights.
