Sharing Custody over the Holidays
If you are facing your first holiday season after a divorce, it is natural to feel anxiety or dread. If you will have custody of your children for the holidays, you may be worried about helping them adjust. If not, you may be upset about spending the holidays alone. Fortunately, no matter what your situation is, there are tips for making this difficult transition a little easier for your children and yourself.
If the Kids are Staying with You
The first holiday after a divorce is a rough situation for parents and for children. There is no way to make this transition entirely pleasant, but there are ways to help your children cope while easing your own stress a little. Some important tips include:
- Don’t try to force happiness on your kids. The holidays may be a little gloomy this year, and that’s okay. Make sure your kids understand that whatever they’re feeling, it is okay to feel that way and to express it.
- At the same time, don’t give up on the holidays completely. Even if the holidays are low key this year, they can still be enjoyable. You may even want to try something new, like taking a trip to a place your family hasn’t visited before.
- Focus on nonmaterial things. Some parents try to “make thing up” to their children with lavish gifts or grand celebrations. The best way to help your children adjust is through attention and support, not material things.
If the Kids are not Staying with You
Facing a holiday without the kids is difficult, but it is survivable. It is important not to just mope around the house; that will only contribute to your bad mood. Spend time with people who care about you. Be sure to let your kids know that you will miss them, but they don’t need to worry about you. You may want to call them over the holiday to check in.
