Separation
Anyone who has been in a marriage for an extended period of time knows that marriage has its ups and its downs. Everyone wants to see a happy marriage, and no one wants to see a marriage break up. Unfortunately, however, sometimes marriages do come upon hard times, and couples do contemplate divorce.
Before jumping directly to divorce, however, a period of separation may be helpful. While divorce will legally end a marriage, separation keeps the couple married but lets them live away from one another.
Separation has many benefits. For one thing, it allows the spouses to take a step back from the whole situation, cool down, and rationally decide what further steps to take. Moreover, separation allows a couple to experience what divorce might feel like without making the couple formally divorce. Another one of the benefits of separation is that allows a couple to keep the benefits that married couples receive, like tax breaks and cheaper health insurance.
Couples can get separated formally and informally. Formal separation is legal separation. It requires the involvement of a court as well as legal representation for both spouses. Informal separation, on the other hand, is separation negotiated by a couple without the involvement of a court. While in the former the court will help decide what happens to finances, child custody, other things, in the latter the spouses decide the guidelines for the separation between themselves.
