Myths about Adoption and Divorce
The reasons for why divorce has become so prevalent are complicated and different for each family. There are a lot of pressures in the modern world, and sometimes these are just too much to keep your family together.
Some people believe that families who choose to adopt may have a greater chance of getting divorced. However, there have been many studies conducted that have disproved this myth and others surrounding adoption and divorce, such as:
- Getting divorced nullifies any adoption procedures: this is not true. If you have already gone through the entire divorce process, your adopted son or daughter will be treated like your natural born children would be in a divorce case. You must battle for custody, but they are still your legal child.
- The amount of money paid in child support is less for an adopted child: again, this is untrue. This Federal law on this is very clear on this matter, the same amount must be given, and in addition, any money that was set aside in the original adoption for special needs or compensation must also be given to the child.
- Divorce disqualifies me for any future adoption: Many single parents are allowed to adopt children. Also, many people who get divorced remarry and most adoption agencies look highly on this.
