Is Divorce the Only Option?
There’s no denying that divorce is more common these days than in the past. After all, half of all marriages end that way. But it is important to realize that divorce may not be the best answer to your marital problems. It is a very final – not to mention expensive – response to the issue.
Before you get a divorce, you need to understand that your life will dramatically change in many ways once you file the divorce papers. You will have to determine:
- Property division. All your possessions get split up, and you will have to determine who gets what.
- Child custody. Your kids will have to spend most of their time with one parent or the other. It is often very difficult and painful to decide who goes where and for how long. Like it or not, you may not be able to spend as much time with your kids as you would like to.
- The trial. Your life will be consumed by unpleasant litigation for quite awhile.
- Talk it out. Marriages have their ups and downs, and occasionally stresses can seem to multiply and make reconciliation seem impossible. But sometimes all it takes to work your way out of a mess is a bit of understanding and open communication.
- Counseling. If talking it out on your own doesn’t work, it can be very valuable to have a trained professional help you come to terms with your problems and work through them together.
- Separation. Sometimes taking a bit of time apart can help put things in perspective. And, if nothing else, it is a less expensive, less final way of seeing what a divorce would be like.
