Child Support Enforcement
Many custodial parents rely on regular child support payments from their former spouses or partners to make ends meet. Unfortunately, these payments do not always arrive in time or at all. Missed child support payments are a very common problem across the country, despite the best efforts of government agencies and attorneys to have these orders enforced.
If your child’s other parent has not been making child support payments, you do have legal options. With the assistance of an experienced Boca Raton divorce lawyer, you may be able to receive the current amount you are owed, including back payments. To learn more, call the offices of Eric N. Klein & Associates, P.C. at 561-353-2800.
Penalties for Missed Child Support
In our state, child support orders are overseen by Florida Child Support Enforcement, a department of the Florida Department of Revenue. Although they are a state agency, they also have authority to pursue payments from non-custodial parents who have moved to other states. They can enforce a variety of penalties, including:
- Withholding IRS tax refunds
- Putting liens on sales of homes, cars, boats, or other property
- Seizing assets or property
- Up to 179 days in jail for contempt of court
- Suspending driver’s licenses, passports, and certain other documents
There is no statute of limitations on pursuing back child support. If your child is over the age of 18, any back payments the courts are able to receive will go directly to him or her. Our Boca Raton child support attorneys can help you and your child fight for the payments you are owed.
